All You Must Know About Humane Society of the United States

The HSUS or the Humane Society of the United States is a nonprofit organization in America based in Washington which was founded by journalists Helen Jones, Fred Myers, Marcia Glaser and Larry Andrews in 1954. This is to take action to what they saw as animal related cruelties of national scope and at the same time, to resolve animal welfare issues by incorporating strategies beyond the abilities or resources of local organizations.

In 2013, the Chronicle of Philanthropy identified HSUS as the 136th largest charity that are operating in the US. Actually in 2001, 5 big problems in animal cruelty such as factory, animal fighting, farming, fur trade, puppy mills and wildlife abuse are the main target of their major campaigns. The organization is dealing with wide range of animal problems that consist of companion animals, horses, wildlife, farm animals and other equine and animals similar to testing, research and education.

Humane Society is believed to earn 129 million dollars in revenue and net assets of 215 million dollars as of December 31, 2014. HSUS pursues global work by partnering with Humane Society International that has listed staff members of 17 nations as of 2013. Some well known affiliates are Doris Day Animal League and Fund for Animals which were founded by Doris day and Cleveland Armory respectively. Along with its affiliates, Fund for Animals, the HSUS is able to operate animal sanctuaries across 5 states.

Humane Society of the United States doesn’t run local shelters or overseeing local animal care as well as control agencies. Instead, it promotes the best practices and supports such entities across the country while offering wide range of services. HSUS formed after schism has mushroomed in American Humane Association over issues like pound, rodeo and seizure policies.

Whether you believe it or not, the first four employees of HSUS which were also active in leading other existing national and local groups are Marcia Glaser, Fred Myers, Helen Jones and Larry Andrews.

These people believed that a new form of organization is going to fortify American humane movement and they’ve set up Humane Society of the United States as being the National Humane Society in Washington, DC to ensure that it plays a pivotal role in the development of animal welfare on a national scale.

Using a proactive approach of the Humane Society of the United States in terms of protecting animals, it is not really a big surprise to why many organizations and locals are backing them up.
